The story

Mitsuha lives in a small mountain town and wants nothing more than to leave it. Taki is a high-school student in Tokyo who juggles classes and a restaurant job. Without warning they start waking up in each other's bodies a few mornings a week, leaving notes and small disasters behind. When the swaps stop, Taki goes looking for a town he has only ever seen through her eyes.

Why watch it

Shinkai's Tokyo is lit like a memory: train doors, crosswalks and window reflections all carry the story. The first half is a comedy of phone memos and misunderstandings; the second half turns into a race against time without losing its lightness.

A scene to pause on. The dusk scene on the crater's rim. The film has a word for that hour – kataware-doki – and the whole sequence is built around the light changing on two faces.
